Tomato Cultivation

For centuries people all over the world have been learning how to perfect tomato cultivation for the many different varieties of tomato plants. So much so that this versatile and nutritious vegetable produce can now easily be grown at your own home. However, to ensure that you get the maximum amount of high quality produce from your efforts it is important that you follow some well established cultivation steps.

  • Firstly you must prepare the soil with lots of compost and the right amount of fertilizer. The fertilizer should not be just any old fertilizer but must be one that has the correct proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in order to achieve the best results.
  • Next you should put into the ground large stakes or a large wooden trellis on which the tomatoes can grow and be attached to. I personally prefer a metal trellis as you can attach even the side branches of your plants to this as well as the main stem. You need to do this before planting so that you don’t disturb the root system of the tomato plants later on once they are established.
  • Then evenly space the tomato seeds into the garden area or if your have raised tomato seedlings in small pots then transplant then after they have developed their second set of leaves. When transplanting tomato seedlings you should wait for a day where it is raining or at the very least overcast so that they are not exposed to the harsh sun as soon as being planted. It is also good to plant them late in the afternoon and not in the early morning.
  • When cultivating tomato plants you should set about watering them every two days. It is best to water your tomato plants either first thing in the morning or as the last thing in the evening so that they get the most amount of time to absorb the water. Also do not let the plants dry out for any significant length of time as this will seriously effect the quality of the produce that you get.

If you find that some of your tomato produce is getting sunscald spots on them (which are light coloured patches on the tomato) then either cover them from direct sunlight using some branches from the plant or just pick the affected tomato and then ripen in on your kitchen windowsill.

A few more tomato cultivation tips are to ensure that you weed the area around the plants frequently, as well as removing any of the dead and yellow leaves from tomatoes in order to avoid plant diseases. Lastly it is very important that you prune the tomato plants correctly so that they produce a bountiful and succulent crop that is the most flavorsome that you have ever tasted.

  3. I agree with Georgina you can never have too many tomatoes growing in your garden. I either give them away to friends and family or alternatively cook all of the excess tomatoes up and make home-made tomato sauce from them :-) :-D

  4. Thank you for another terrific article. Exactly where else could anyone get that type of data in this kind of a perfect way of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I’m looking around for just this kind of information.

  7. Thanks for the info…In my feeble private attempts to be “green” and “healthful”, I eat solely the healhiest of products, most of which I grow Myself. I make use of Seaweed Fertilizers and Organic Seaweed to develop my produce. In this manner I can manage the nutrient content of my food. Have any of you guys used this method? I find this the best.
